FUJISAN
Text by Aruha Miya
FUJISAN / Mt.Fuji is a mountain which is symbol of a nation and also has being used as a topic for every kinds of events as art, literature or geography in long Japanese history. This mountain is rare as a mountain so far as that is concerned. Speaking about mt.Fuji can be speaking about Asian culture and philosophy. And on the other hand it's a best example of nature, it's a volcano still active. Mt. Fuji has two-sidedness, an artificial symbol and a volcano represents the origin of the earth, nature.
The one of the purposes of this project is questioning the relationship between nature and humans civilization through the two-facedness Mt.Fuji has. And expressing a fusion of Asia and the West through accessing the depth of Asian philosophy from the point of view of French photographer.
Besides, Mt. Fuji is famous as a motif of Hokusai ukiyo-e work. Originally, Meaning of Ukiyo is "the miserable world", it's a word based on Buddhism philosophy. The reason why Buddhism thought the world is miserable is every matters in this world isn't unchangeable. Everything in this world is changing its nature every moments as the water repeats evaporation, freezing and melting. As your feeling is changing every moments, as your youth is getting older every moment, as power of your desire is changing every moment. Everything is moving, going on. There is nothing you can carry with you certainly.
However a photography can catch the moment before the moment goes to the next second, before it changes into something else. In the photography, this world which is consisted by infinite organics can be unchangeable, eternity. The world can become eternity when it reaches to the summit of beauty in photographer's eyes through a camera.
The concept for this work is giving the public an experience to touch mystique and poetic area that a relationship between the finite human civilization and the infinite system of natural world contains though the photography of a human society having Mt. Fuji as a background visually, and nailing the Ukiyo down in a sublimity with a camera before it moves on and loses the moment.
Fujisan" is a photography project which was produced by French photographer Francois Cavelier.
Every photographies were taken from January to June 2010.
