LACANAU BEACH

Every year in summertime, surfers and nature lovers settle down temporary in Lacanau, an holiday hot spot near Bordeaux, France.
On this long and large stripe of sand beated by the Atlantic, people seek for a "back to nature" feeling, organizing their holidays with and for the Ocean and trying by this to avoid any kind of social order.
Three years in the row, François Cavelier went up and down the beach to portray vacationers and investigate their personal and individualistic holidays statement. By this, he shows how a light social structure still remain, connecting people to each other. The photographer as an beach outsider draw also links between people and take part of that social structure by asking them to pose.
With Lacanau Beach, François Cavelier also give us a commentary about this very strong french mythology which is the paid holidays (les congés payés) established in 1936 and seems to paraphrase this emblematic Roland Barthes's quotation : " People don't claim passion itself but the image of it ".
Chaque année en été, les surfeurs et les amoureux de la nature s'installent temporairement à Lacanau-Océan, un rendez-vous pour les vacanciers près de Bordeaux, en France. Sur cette longue et large bande de sable battu par l'océan Atlantique, on vient pour un sentiment de "retour à la nature", organisant les vacances avec et pour l'océan et en essayant par là d'éviter tout type d'ordre social.
Trois années d'affilée, François Cavelier a monté et descendu la plage pour y portraiturer les vacanciers et étudier leur habitudes. En cela, il montre comment une légère structure sociale demeurent, reliant les personnes les unes aux autres. Le photographe, tel une personne extérieure, tisse des liens entre les gens et de ce fait prend part à la structure sociale en leur demandant de poser.
Avec Lacanau Beach, François Cavelier nous donne aussi un commentaire sur cette très forte mythologie française qui sont les congés payés établis en 1936 et semble paraphraser cette citation emblématique de Roland Barthes: « Ce que le public réclame, c’est l’image de la passion, non la passion elle-même. ».
